Demonstration projects

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is implementing a demonstration project to improve safety for people walking and bicycling along and across MnDOT roads. Demonstration projects are short-term, low-cost, temporary roadway projects used to pilot potential long-term design solutions to improve walking/bicycling and public spaces. Demonstration projects allow public agencies, community partners, and people walking, bicycling, taking transit, and driving to evaluate potential infrastructure improvements before potentially investing in permanent changes.

Projects currently being planned and implemented:
District 1: Beaver Bay

The temporary crossing improvements at this intersection will include:

  • A Pedestrian Gateway crossing treatment
  • Temporary curb extensions

District 3: Long Prairie, Wahkon, Braham

COMPLETE: 2021 demonstration project in Long Prairie on Highway 287 included:

  • Added a temporary multi-use path along Highway 287 marked with plastic tubes
  • Installed temporary curb extensions at several intersections to shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians

COMPLETE: 2021 demonstration project in Wahkon on Highway 27 will included:

  • Shortened the pedestrian crossing distance by removing the center left turn lane and added curb extensions at two crossings
  • Added bicycle lanes marked with plastic tubes

Complete a survey for the Wahkon demonstration project.

COMPLETE: 2021 demonstration project in Braham on Highway 107 will included:

  • Installed temporary curb extensions at several intersections to shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians
  • Plastic tubes to modeled a narrower roadway cross-section

District 4: Pelican Rapids and Moorhead

District 6: Blooming Prairie

This temporary demonstration project will include:

  • Installing curb extensions using paint and plastic tubes at the intersection of 1st Street and 3rd Avenue NE with US 218. Curb extensions can help to improve safety by shortening the crossing distance for pedestrians.

Complete a survey for the Blooming Prairie demonstration project.

District 7: Wells

This temporary demonstration project will include:

  • Installing curb extensions using paint and plastic tubes at the intersection of 3rd Street SW and TH 22. Curb extensions can help to improve safety by shortening the crossing distance for pedestrians.
  • Adding an on-street bicycle lane along 1st Street NW (TH 109)

District 8: Pipestone

This temporary demonstration project will include:

  • Installing curb extensions using paint and plastic tubes at the intersection of 4th Street SE and TH 75. Curb extensions can help to improve safety by shortening the crossing distance for pedestrians.
  • Installing a median island at the intersection of 5th Street SE and TH 75.
