E-ZPass news and updates
I-35W in Burnsville project
The southern portion of I-35W between Cliff Rd. and the I-35/I-35W/I-35E split in Burnsville will have major construction in 2025 as MnDOT replaces bridges, improves drainage, and resurfaces the interstate from Cliff Rd. to the I-35/I-35W/I-35E split.
Beginning in April, all traffic will be diverted to the northbound lanes. The E-ZPass lane between Cliff Rd. and the split will be a regular lane and open to all traffic (no toll or fee). Northbound access to the E-ZPass lane will be north of Cliff Rd. near the Minnesota River Bridge. Going southbound, the E-ZPass lane will end near 98th St., prior to the work zone.

I-394 and I-94 in Minneapolis project
MnDOT needs to repair 34 bridges on I-394 between Hwy 100 and downtown Minneapolis. The I-394 reversible E-ZPass lanes will be unavailable during construction (closed in 2025, regular lanes and open to all in 2026).
Beginning this summer, the E-ZPass reversible lanes from Hwy 100 to downtown Minneapolis will be closed as they work on repairs and replacements in the center section of I-394. There won’t be access to the reversible E-ZPass lanes in either direction between Hwy 100 and Minneapolis. Work will occur between July and November. All traffic will use the general lanes.
In 2026, the reversible E-ZPass lanes will be used as regular lanes (no toll or fee) as the project diverts all traffic to one side of I-394 to work on the other side, switching sides halfway through the season. The I-394 reversible E-ZPass lanes will operate as regular lanes for the entire 2026 construction season, February through November.

Fraud and scams continue

Fraud activity continues throughout the nation with scam artists sending fake messages claiming you have an invoice, violation, or a bill from using Minnesota E-ZPass or another E-ZPass facility. Minnesota E-ZPass will never email or text you for payment or personal information.
- Delete and don’t respond to anything that seems off or suspicious.
- If you clicked on a link or provided information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts.
- You can report fraud activity to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center or the Federal Trade Commission.
Scam artists use sophisticated techniques, legitimate looking messages or URLs, and a sense of urgency hoping to trick people into clicking on a link or replying to a message. Phone numbers and email are chosen at random, and they are targeting everyone—not just E-ZPass users.
Sometimes scam artists send what looks like an invoice in the mail. Scam letters will include a bogus or questionable URL link and will often have a sense of urgency. Minnesota E-ZPass, MnDOT, or other agencies may send a letter in the mail, but it will look official including agency letterhead, detailed information, and multiple methods for contacting and/or remitting payment to the agency. If you receive a letter in the mail, confirm it is legitimate and always verify information directly with the agency.
If you have questions or concerns, check your account through the secure customer portal, or contact us directly.
Out-of-state travel

A trip out-of-state, or a change in your driving pattern, may impact your E-ZPass account. If you are traveling out-of-state, we recommend making a larger one-time payment or increasing your automatic replenishment and low balance threshold amounts before traveling to avoid your balance falling negative before the next replenishment cycle. You can make these changes online or by contacting customer service at 1-866-397-4334.
You need the switchable Minnesota E-ZPass tag to travel on E-ZPass lanes outside of Minnesota. MnPASS tags, either switchable or sticker, ONLY work in Minnesota. If you plan on using your E-ZPass account outside of Minnesota, you must swap your MnPASS tag for a Minnesota E-ZPass tag. There is no charge for swapping tags. NOTE: a new tag can take 24-48 hours to be “active” and ready to use on the E-ZPass network. If you need a new Minnesota E-ZPass tag, please plan accordingly.
Out-of-state tags (e.g. I-PASS)
If you already have an E-ZPass tag from another E-ZPass agency (for example I-PASS), please be sure to remove that tag from your vehicle if you are using one of our Minnesota tags (E-ZPass or MnPASS), or if you are carpooling and the tag doesn’t have the option to switch it into HOV mode. Other E-ZPass tags are always in fee-paying mode, and you will be charged. Not removing the tag from your vehicle may result in duplicate tolls or being charged when carpooling in Minnesota E-ZPass lanes.

Using your tag in a rental vehicle
Your E-ZPass tag can be used in rental vehicles. Your rental vehicle should be added to your E-ZPass account as an additional vehicle while in use to avoid any potential violations. Be sure to immediately remove the rental vehicle from your account when you turn it back in. You may be held responsible for tolls until the rental vehicle is removed from your account. Additionally, several states elect not to reverse these charges for customers when they occur.
Many rental vehicles are already equipped with tolling devices, be sure to work with your rental car company to deactivate their device and use your own E-ZPass tag.
