BAXTER, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation invites area residents and travelers to a public meeting to learn about 2028 roadwork plans for Highway 71 from Sebeka to Menahga and Highway 87 west from Menahga in Wadena County.

The open house-style meeting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 23, at Menahga City Hall, 115 2nd St. NE from 4:30-6:30 p.m. There’s no formal presentation—just stop by anytime to see details on preliminary project design, speak with project staff and ask questions.

Design work will continue through 2025 and 2026, with final design and traffic plans to be completed in 2027 and construction to occur in 2028. To complete this work, the existing road surface will be recycled. This process will require segments of road closures with detours.

Planned improvements

  • Highway 71:
    • Reconstruct the road from Third Street SE to the Blueberry River in Menahga:
      • Replace and update sanitary and storm sewer systems
      • Upgrade pedestrian sidewalks, approach ramps and crossings, including the intersection of Highway 71 and Highway 87
    • Reconstruct (reclaim/recycle) the road surface from the Redeye River in Sebeka to Third Street SE in Menahga
  • Highway 87:
    • Reconstruct (reclaim/recycle) the road surface from the Becker/Wadena county line to Fir Avenue
    • Resurface (mill and overlay) the road from Fir Avenue to Highway 71
