Hwy 51/Snelling Avenue closes Monday, June 17 between Ford Parkway and Montreal Avenue in St. Paul

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will close Highway 51/Snelling Avenue in both directions early Monday morning, June 17, to begin reconstruction of a half-mile stretch of roadway between Ford Parkway and Montreal Avenue. During the closure, construction crews will maintain access to all homes along the west side of Snelling Ave. Traffic will be detoured on Montreal Ave., Fairview Ave. and Ford Pkwy. Trucks will be detoured on Montreal Ave., St. Paul Ave. and Cleveland Ave. The road will reopen by 10 p.m. on Fri., June 21.

Following the full closure, Snelling Ave. will be reduced to one lane in both directions in the same area for work on the east side of Snelling Ave. The single lane traffic will begin Monday, June 24, and last through mid-July. Truck traffic will not be allowed, and trucks will detour on Montreal Ave., St. Paul Ave. and Cleveland Ave.

Additional traffic restrictions will begin in mid-July so watch for updates.

Crews are redesigning a half-mile section of the four-lane Snelling Ave. to two-lanes between Ford Pkwy. and Montreal Ave. in St. Paul. Work began in mid-June of 2024. This traffic safety project includes installing a center median with dedicated left turn lanes at the median breaks, removing parking along Snelling Ave. and constructing a new 10-foot wide multi-use trail along the east side of Snelling Ave. and replacing the signal at Montreal Ave. and Snelling Ave. Work is expected to b3 complete by late August.
