Highway 53 Eveleth construction traffic control changes Aug. 27

DULUTH, Minn. –  The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be changing traffic control on Highway 53 in Eveleth starting on Wednesday, Aug 27. The next stage of construction will move traffic back on to Highway 53 instead of the detour route.
Traffic will be moved back on to Highway 53, and motorists can expect lane shifts and areas of head-to-head traffic. The roundabout at Progress Parkway will also open at this time providing access to the schools. Motorists will still be directed up and down the Highway 37 ramps as bridge work continues.

A truck detour is still in place that takes traffic on Highway 135 to Highway 37 through Gilbert and back to Highway 53 south of Eveleth. For maps and general project information, please visit the website here: https://www.dot.state.mn.us/d1/projects/hwy53-eveleth/index.html.

  • Drive undistracted. Avoid using cell phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating –while in work zones.
  • Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
  • Know before you go. Get real-time information about traffic and road conditions at www.511mn.org  or get the free 511mn smartphone app at Google Play or the App Store.
  • Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Do the  zipper merge.
  • Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
  • Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
