Portion of Main Avenue in Moorhead closes June 2 for 11th Street underpass project

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Starting Monday, June 2, motorists will encounter closures on a portion of Main Avenue in Moorhead for the 11th Street underpass project, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

On June 2, Main Avenue will close between 10th Street South and 13th Street South as Stage 2 work begins. Closures on First Avenue North remain in place as construction continues simultaneously in Stage 1, as well as portions of 11th Street for bridge construction.

Main Avenue traffic shouldfollow the detour on 10th Street South, Second Avenue South and 13th Street South. Center Avenue remains open to east and west traffic. Your patience is appreciated as drivers get familiar with new traffic patterns and routes. Please plan ahead for potential traffic and rail delays.

Stage 2 work is expected to last through November, and includes reconstructing Main Avenue with underground utility replacements, and reconstructing 11th Street to tie into the future underpass bridges. Once Stage 2 is complete, construction of Stage 3 on Center Avenue will follow.

The 11th Street Grade Separation project includes two grade separations of 11th Street under the BNSF rail lines, as well as paving, sidewalk improvements, utility replacements and signals. The project will provide safety and mobility benefits by removing blockages caused by heavy rail traffic. The work is being completed in stages through November 2026.

Sign up for project progress emails and learn more on the project website, mndot.gov/d4/projects/moorhead11thstreetunderpass. A project hotline is available at 218-292-8779. The hotline is staffed during regular business hours and also accepts voicemails from business owners or residents with questions.

The public is also invited to attend in-person updates every third Tuesday of the month through October, with the next meeting on June 17, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., at the Hjemkomst Center, 202 1st Ave N in Moorhead. These meetings are held monthly to provide progress updates and to answer questions from residents or businesses. If you need an ASL, a foreign language interpreter, or documents in an alternative format to participate, please contact Janet Miller at 651-366-4720 (711 or 1-800-627-3529 for MN Relay) or email ADArequest.dot@state.mn.us.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, and slowdown in work zones where workers are present.
