Hwy 53 Eveleth construction traffic control changes
DULUTH, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be changing traffic control and implementing a detour of Highway 53 in Eveleth starting today. The next stage of construction will be starting with intersection improvements and construction of a roundabout at Progress Parkway.
Highway 53 will be directed on to the southbound lanes in a head-to-head configuration. Traffic will then go down the west ramp to a temporary signal at the intersection with Highway 37 before continuing up the ramp. It will then shift on to Hat Trick Avenue to Park Avenue to Old Highway 53 then back to the southbound lanes of Highway 53. A 12’ width limit will be in place.
A truck detour will take traffic on Highway 135 to Highway 37 through Gilbert and back to Highway 53 south of Eveleth.
Traffic is expected to be using this detour route through late August. For maps of both detour routes and general project information, please visit the website: mndot.gov/d1/projects/hwy53-eveleth/index.html.

- Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
- Know before you go. Get real-time information about traffic and road conditions at www.511mn.org or get the free 511mn smartphone app at Google Play or the App Store.
- Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
- Do the zipper merge.
- Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
- Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
