Hwy 59 and Hwy 67 intersection in Clarkfield will close for railroad work May 28

WILLMAR, Minn. – The intersection of Highway 59 and Highway 67 in Clarkfield will close May 28 according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. BNSF Railway will be replacing track through the intersection, and work is expected to conclude by end of day on May 30.

MnDOT is currently reconstructing Highway 67 from Highway 59 to 6th Street in Clarkfield. The project includes storm sewer replacement, sidewalk replacement, and pedestrian ramp additions to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Traffic impact updates

  • Highway 59 was closed just north of Highway 67 on May 6 for work related to the MnDOT project and will remain closed until the BNSF Railway project is completed. Through traffic is being routed to Highway 67, and County Roads 8 and 5.
  • Beginning May 28, the Highway 59 and Highway 67 intersection will close to allow BNSF Railway crews to replace the railroad tracks that run through the intersection. Through traffic will be routed to County Roads 3, 9, 29, 5 and 8. The detour will remain in place through May 30 or until work is completed.
  • Beginning May 28, Highway 67 will close from Highway 59 to 6th Street to complete the MnDOT project. Once the BNSF Railway project is completed and the Highway 59/67 intersection reopens, through traffic will be routed to Highway 59, and County Roads 5 and 8. The detour will be in place until Nov. 1 when the project is expected to conclude.

MnDOT project benefits and cost

Benefits of the project include a smoother road surface, improved storm sewer system and drainage, updated pedestrian crossings, as well as a state and city infrastructure that will continue to serve their purpose for many years. R and G Construction is the contractor, and the project cost is approximately $4.7 million.
