Work on the Gogebic Creek culvert in Riverside will begin on August 14. Highway 23 vehicular traffic is not impacted during 2023 operations. The Munger Trail will be fully closed and detoured. The detour route takes Riverwest Drive to Highway 23 sidewalk to Grand Avenue Place to 93rd Avenue West and will be in place until approximately October 7.
The replacement of the US Steel Creek culvert in Gary underneath Highway 23 will start on August 21 and require a vehicular traffic detour. The detour route takes Becks Road to Gary Street and will be in place until October 25.

Summary of work
For US Steel Creek, the deteriorating drainage structure is resulting in reduced hydraulic capacity and distress to Hwy 23. Culvert replacement will provide for adequate hydraulic capacity, structural stability, and road core integrity.
For Gogebic Creek, the deteriorating drainage structure is resulting in reduced hydraulic capacity, distress to Hwy 23 and Willard Munger Trail. Culvert replacement will provide for adequate hydraulic capacity, structural stability and road core integrity.
The planned project schedule has construction occurring May through August 2023. There will be three stages of construction. Stage 1 will include Gogebic Creek and Munger Trail detours. In Stage 2, the Munger Trail will be reconstructed and there will be a temporary bypass of Highway 23. In Stage 3, the US Steel Creek culvert will be constructed.
The Willard Munger State Trail will be reconstructed as part of this project, causing impacts to bikes and pedestrians. The detour route takes Riverwest Drive to Highway 23 sidewalk to Grand Avenue Place to 93rd Avenue West and will be in place until approximately October 7.
