Transportation Specialist Series career paths

All Transportation Specialist Series hourly wage increases occur every six months with good performance.

Transportation Associate (TA)

  • Transportation Associates work as trainees who perform skilled roadway surface and roadside maintenance activities.

  • Within one year, trainees are automatically promoted to Transportation Generalist with good performance.

Transportation Generalist (TG)

Assists or conducts annual inspections of in-service bridges and culverts on the state, county and local highway system throughout the state of Minnesota so structural integrity is maintained at the lowest safety risk and inconvenience to the public, to identify maintenance needs and to meet federal regulations.

TG, TGS, TS

Conducts or assists in necessary repairs and installations in the area of steel fabrication and erection for bridges and structures so that structural integrity is maintained at the lowest safety risk and inconvenience to the public.

TG, TGS, TS

Administers and/or directs field testing of construction materials by analyzing test results, verifying material quality and determining if construction materials meet MnDOT specifications. Reads and interprets plans and specifications to ensure contractor compliance.

Completes computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) functions and calculations; applies software programs used to perform technical detail drafting and design of plans in accordance with MnDOT policy and design standards.

TS Only

Administers in-depth safety inspections of bridges on both the trunk highway and local systems, with a special emphasis on bridges with fracture critical members so structural integrity is maintained.

Conducts all aspects of standardized and specific materials lab testing using specialized lab equipment to provide test results on materials for construction, design, maintenance or research.

Supports the inspection and processing of access, drainage and utility permits affecting MnDOT highways so that rules, statutes, regulations and special provisions set by permit requirements are followed.

TS Only

Updates and maintains construction project information for project activities and timelines; serves as the project expert in documenting, accessing, utilizing and retrieving project data from the computerized system for other MnDOT and project staff.

Develops preliminary design studies and prepares geometric layouts using computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) according to MnDOT design standards and CADD data standards that best suit project needs (e.g., geometric, safety, traffic, funding and right of way.)

Performs technical activities of acquiring right of way and management of property owned by MnDOT, as well as reconveyances, turnbacks, leases, limited use permits and access control changes to ensure compliance with statutes, policies and regulations.

Maintains and reconstructs roadways, rights of way and roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous and concrete; participates in culvert cleaning and guardrail repair; sets up traffic controls in high volume traffic and performs work associated with accidents, spills and ruts; and performs preventative maintenance on highway equipment.

Installs, repairs and removes permanent signs and messages according to the MN Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices and Traffic Engineering Manual (MUTCD) to ensure the safety of the motoring and pedestrian public.

Removes snow from roadways and shoulders, rest areas, rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemical on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols for the safety of the travelling public.

Assists in setting up soils sampling and testing equipment so that soils, rocks, pavement samples and ground water information are taken in the right location and in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), MN Department of Health and MnDOT standards.

Performs technical work associated with land, location, construction and/or geodetic control surveys and creation of base maps to ensure accurate information and computation of the purchase of right of way, the design and construction of highways and other transportation systems, or setting of accurate control points.
