Medical choices
MnDOT employees can select from several medical insurance plans. Our managed care plans include a low first dollar-deductible, reasonable co-pays, free preventive care, and an excellent prescription drug program. The plan's out-of-packet maximums protect your bottom line. The approximate monthly cost of medical coverage for full-time employees is less than $40 for someone enrolled in individual coverage, and less than $225 for family.

Dental plan options
Dental benefits are available at a low cost for employees and their family members. Choose between HealthPartners and the State Dental Plan (Delta Dental of Minnesota).
- Preventive, basic and restorative services

Defined pension plan
Employees currently contribute a percentage (5.5%) towards their retirement account and the State will match this contribution. Retirement benefits are managed by the Minnesota State Retirement System (MSRS).
Deferred compensation plan
This plan offers a tax-deferred savings plan that can help supplement an employee’s Social Security and MSRS retirement benefits. Employees can choose from a variety of accounts – from fixed rate to high risk.
Basic term life insurance
Term life insurance is provided based upon your annual salary at no cost to you. Managers are offered a choice of life insurance equal to 1.5 or 2 times annual salary.
Optional life and disability insurance
Additional term life insurance is available to be purchased for employees, spouses, and eligible children at a minimal cost. Optional disability policies provide security beyond our sick and vacation balances.

Pre-tax savings accounts
Pre-tax accounts allow employees to set aside money before taxes are deducted to pay for certain expenses. Savings average 25-30 percent.

Tuition assistance
We encourage our employees to seek educational opportunities to further their knowledge and skills. After one year of benefit-eligible employment, MnDOT may offer some support to pursue higher education that will enhance your career and contributions.
New employee orientation program
When you join MnDOT, you will participate in an orientation session that highlights MnDOT’s structure, organization, mission, vision, goals and the tools to be successful in your new position.
Employee education
We provide a full range of resources for you to increase and improve your knowledge, skills and abilities, including classroom training, online modules and quick reference guides.
Leadership development
MnDOT’s statewide Leadership Development Program is offered to all employees. The program is individually customized and flexible to meet each participant’s development goals. Participating is a great way to improve your core competency skills as well as to learn more about MnDOT.

LifeMatters Employee Assistance Program provides expert, confidential, personal consultation for concerns including financial and legal matters, relationship challenges, and personal and family problems for state employees and family members.

Central Office Fitness Center
The fitness center is a low-cost resource designed to help employees be healthy and stay in shape. The Fitness Center is operated and maintained by employees who volunteer on the MnDOT Health and Wellness Committee. The workout room offers aerobic and weight training equipment and many other amenities. Men’s and women’s locker/shower facilities are available for Fitness Center user’s during their work out.
Employee Activities
The Hiwayan Club is a social club that plans and promotes activities for employees and retirees and their families through the year. A variety of activities and discounts are available.
Employee Recognition
MnDOT’s Above and Beyond Program recognizes employees who have gone “Above and Beyond” to exhibit excellence in a variety of areas. It emphasizes contributions and accomplishments – both on and off the job – which represent loyalty, dedication and excellence of service to the public, community, co-workers and the department. Any current MnDOT employee can nominate another employee for an Above and Beyond award.

MnDOT recognizes the many benefits of cultivating and encouraging a diverse pool of employees.
