About the program
The Active Transportation Program provides grants to make walking, biking and rolling better. Our grants aim to increase the number of people walking and biking to destinations by:
- Providing funding for:
- Planning
- Education and encouragement
- Engineering studies
- Infrastructure investment
- Supporting Minnesota Strategic Highway Safety Plan goals:
- Make walking and biking safer, easier, and more accessible
- Advancing Sustainable Transportation Advisory Council recommendations:
- Reduce vehicle miles traveled
- Improve transportation options
Vision
All people in Minnesota have access to safe and convenient active transportation where they live, work, and play.
Legislation
The Minnesota legislature established the Active Transportation program in 2018 and funded it with $5 million dollars in 2021. Read the statute.
Timeframe
- Fall 2021: Stakeholder engagement and program development
- Winter 2022: Solicitation for planning assistance grants
- Summer 2022: Capacity building, training, and technical assistance programming
- Fall 2022: Solicitation for infrastructure, demonstration projects, and non-infrastructure grants
