Tree removal along Highway 22 between St. Peter and Highway 111 begins March 24 in preparation for construction this summer

MANKATO, Minn. – Motorists are advised to use caution on Highway 22 from St. Peter to Highway 111 starting Monday, March 24, weather permitting, as workers begin removing trees in preparation for construction this summer, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Motorists will encounter shoulder closures along Highway 22. Drivers should remove distractions and be aware of workers in the area until the completion of the work in late March. The work needs to be done early in the year to prevent protected bats from making their homes in the trees.

The tree removal is preliminary work for the Highway 22 St. Peter to Highway 111 resurfacing project. The project will include resurfacing approximately 12 miles of Highway 22 from the intersection with Nicollet County Road 20 to Highway 111. The project also includes adding a right turn lane at Nicollet County Road 20, upgrading lighting at intersections, and culvert repairs.

Construction for the project is anticipated to begin in mid-July and continue until mid-October with traffic detoured during construction. All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather dependent and subject to change.

Benefits of the project include improved pavement and drainage, and increased safety with upgraded lighting and access modifications. Ulland Brothers, Inc. was awarded the project with a bid of $3,873,434.47.
