Concrete Pavement Restoration (CPR) for Bonded Concrete Overlays of Asphalt
Status: Complete
Project Start Date: May 15, 2019
Project End Date: April 30, 2020
Summary
BCOA pavements can help to enhance the structural capacity and rideability of existing asphalt pavement. CPR techniques have been used widely to repair traditional concrete pavements, but these techniques may be or may not be applicable to BCOA. The objective of this project is to develop a synthesis of best practices being used by NRRA state members in repairing BCOA for publication.
Methodology
The goal of this project is to identify the different techniques that have been applied to BCOA sections and their performance. Performance data which include the improvements and extension of service life, and costs related to the type of maintenance will be collected. The PI will gather information on the loss of ride quality and time taken for the existing distresses to reflect through and optimum timeframe to apply the maintenance from NRRA state members, followed by summarizing the findings into a report that can be serve as a guidance.
Tasks
Task 1B: Survey
The PI will identify BCOA sections that have been installed and what type of fixes have been carried out and their resulting performance. The PI will develop a synthesis of best practices being used by the seven NRRA state members (Caltrans, Illinois DOT, Michigan DOT, Minnesota DOT, Missouri DOT, North Dakota DOT, and Wisconsin DOT) if available, and up to three other researches specified by the NRRA Technical Liaison. Missouri DOT and Minnesota DOT have installed numerous BCOA pavements.
- Scheduled Date for Task Final Approval: August 31, 2019
- Deliverable: A brief report summarizing the information compiled under Task 1 meetings with the NRRA Technical Liaison to discuss findings.
Task 2B: Literature review
The PI will conduct brief literature review to summarize ongoing or recently completed national studies.
- Scheduled Date for Task Final Approval: August 31, 2019
- Deliverable: A report summarizing the data collected under Task 2 and meetings with the NRRA Technical Liaison to discuss results.
Task 3B: Compile report, technical advisory panel review, and revisions
The PI will prepare a draft final report, following MnDOT publication guidelines, to document project activities, findings and recommendations. This report will be reviewed by the Technical Advisory Panel (TAP), updated by the PI to incorporate technical comments, and then approved by the Technical Liaison before this task is considered complete. If possible, a TAP meeting will be scheduled to facilitate the discussion of the draft report.
- Scheduled Date for Final Report Approval: September 30, 2019
- Deliverables: A draft final report for TAP review, and a revised report that is technically complete and approved by the TL for publication.
Task 4B: Editorial review and publication of final report
During this task, the PI will work directly with MnDOT’s contract editors to address editorial comments and finalize the document in a timely manner. The contract editors will publish the report and ensure it meets publication standards.
- Scheduled End Date: September 30, 2019
- Deliverables: Final Report
