Overnight I-94 traffic changes and lane closures scheduled Oct. 5-21
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Motorists will encounter a traffic shift and intermittent lane closures overnight on both directions of I-94 as crews move closer to completing pavement work on the interstate from St. Paul to Maplewood.
Beginning at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5 through 6 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, eastbound I-94 traffic will be shifted from the local access lane to the far right (outside) lane between Mounds Blvd. and Highway 120/Century Avenue. Currently, this lane is located next to the permanent center median.
Motorists traveling on eastbound I-94 may experience a brief delay of a few minutes during this time. All ramps on eastbound I-94 that are currently open to traffic will remain accessible. This shift is necessary to allow crews to apply permanent markings or striping to the roadway in the far left (inside) lane.
In addition, beginning at 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 9, through 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, eastbound I-94 between Mounds Blvd. and Highway 120/Century Avenue will be reduced to a single lane. All ramps on eastbound I-94 that are currently open to traffic will remain accessible during this timeframe.
By 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, eastbound I-94 will reopen to three newly paved lanes in each direction, weather permitting.
The following eastbound I-94 entrance/exits ramps are also expected to reopen to traffic on Tuesday, Oct. 10:
• Etna Street/Southbound Highway 61 to eastbound I-94
• Northbound Highway 61 to eastbound I-94
• Eastbound I-94 to White Bear Avenue
• Burns Avenue/Hudson Pl. (McKnight Road ramp) to eastbound I-94
• Eastbound I-94 to Highway 120/Century Avenue
Motorists should expect lane closures on westbound I-94 between Highway 120/Century Avenue and Mounds Boulevard nightly from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12 through Saturday, Oct. 21 as crews apply permanent markings on the new pavement.
The following westbound I-94 ramps are expected to reopen on Saturday, Oct. 21, schedule permitting.
- Hudson Road to westbound I-94 (the far east entrance ramp in front of 3M) is closed
- White Bear Avenue to westbound I-94
These ramps are closed because there is not enough room to safely merge onto the interstate. Therefore, the travel lanes need to be shifted back to pre-project driving conditions before we can reopen these ramps.
Construction crews will be in the project area through late fall to remove equipment and the crossovers that drivers use to choose their lane – the thru/bypass lane or the local access lane during construction.
