I-35E bridge repair project begins Sunday evening May 7 on bridge over Shepard Road in St. Paul

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Preliminary work begins Sunday evening, May 7th to repair and resurface the Interstate 35E bridge over Shepard Road south of downtown St. Paul.

Beginning at 6 p.m., the ramp from West 7th Street/Fort Road to southbound I-35E will close for approximately two weeks so crews can build crossovers to shift traffic during work on the bridge deck. Motorists should also watch for lane closures and construction traffic and workers on I-35E throughout the weekend.

During the West 7th Street/Fort Road ramp closure, motorists should follow the signed detours:

  • Eastbound W. 7th Street: East on Montreal Avenue, south on Elway Street and east on Shepard Road
  • Westbound W. 7th Street: South on Otto Avenue and west on Shepard Road

Once the crossover lanes are completed by late May, interstate traffic will be shifted to the outside lanes of the bridge. At the same time, Shepard Road will be restricted to a single lane in each direction. The interstate will remain two lanes in each direction during the day.

Motorists should expect nighttime lane closures throughout the project.

Weather permitting, work should be completed by late September.

Repairs and resurfacing of the bridge provides a smoother bridge surface and extends the service life of the roadway, bridge and drainage systems.
